Bad Sisters Premieres On AppleTV+ Amid Early Praise
How far would you go to protect your family? Some, like the Garvey sisters, may go further than others. We won’t give anything away, but you can find out just how far when the first two episodes of the highly anticipated dark comedy thriller “Bad Sisters” premiere on AppleTV+ on Friday August 19th.
The show, created by and starring BAFTA winner Sharon Horgan as eldest sister, Eva, follows five sisters bound together by their parents’ untimely death in a car accident and a promise to protect one another, as they navigate the mysterious death of sister Grace’s (Anne-Marie Duff) husband John Paul Williams (Claes Bang). Not to mention – the husband in question was, to put it lightly, horrible.
Set between London and Dublin, Bad Sisters is based on CLAN, a 2012 Flemish TV series created by CAVIAR’s Malin-Sarah Gozin, who served as executive producer on the new series. “It felt wonderful to spend some time with these sisters again, it was like meeting up with old friends that have now moved abroad,” says Gozin. “It’s so fascinating to see these Belgian sisters from CLAN being reimagined as a tight-knit, darkly funny family of Irish sisters. The Irish sensibility and sense of humor that Sharon brought to the table wonderfully complement the tone of the story, and I really appreciate how everyone loved and honored my original work.” The show is also executive produced by CAVIAR’s Bert Hamelinck and Michael Sagol.
The themes of the show are painfully relatable, which lend to the show’s dark humor. Because life is too short to not laugh at personal tragedies, right? “CLAN was created 10 years ago, but the topic of toxic masculinity and the way we react to that is still so relevant.” says Gozin. “When there’s one bad man in a family who mistreats everyone, how much do you have to take? The show really deals with that drama, which I think audiences connect with.”
